2019-2023 Strategic Plan

Our updated strategic plan focuses on our goals which aim to ensure that NKAI:
  • Has clear Direction and the Capability to deliver.
  • Builds the Capacity of our Key Stakeholders.
  • Strengthens our Partnerships and Advocates for our membership.
Attached as Appendices 1 to the Milestone 10 Report is the Updated 2019-2023 Strategic Plan which is driven by the three goals above.  The following strategy explanation is what we have included in our report to MOE as well.

NKAI Direction and Capability:  This strategic focus aims to ensure that our organisation enables our people to achieve the goals of their iwi, community and kura by having a clear vision, strategy and an effective infrastructure.  The NKAI approach is not to dictate to our people, but to enhance what our people are doing throughout the country as we all strive to achieve ‘Te Tihi o Angitu’.  Therefore, NKAI is investing in our:
  • Constitution to achieve Charitable status and gain the associated organisation benefits.
  • Communication and collaboration infrastructure across the NKAI network, especially for kura leaders and teachers so that it is easier for our people across the country to support each other and work together.
  • KMS system to support the planning, monitoring, communication and support for whānau, students and teachers in relation to the education journey of each NKAI student.
  • Partnership with EDU to support the utilization of the KMS across Kura ā Iwi, other Māori Immersion settings, other kura in New Zealand and possibly abroad.

NKAI Capacity Building of our Key Stakeholders:  NKAI Capacity Building is where we are looking to make our biggest investment of energy and resources.  We have a major focus on teachers and the improvement in student achievement in targeted areas including those expressed in the Kua Ea Outcomes Agreement between NKAI and MOE.  Our major goals in regard to the capacity building of our people are to:
  • Further define the Tihi o Angitu Learning Progressions across Tukuihotanga (Culturally Autonomy), Pūkenga Ako (Intellectual Independence) and Whai Oranga (Holistic Wellbeing).  The NKAI Learning Progressions Framework will reflect what our iwi, whānau and kura feel is important and will be the foundation of student learning and teacher professional learning and development.
  • Increase the promotion of our events (Leadership Wānanga and National Conference) to our kaumatua/elders and wider iwi network, so that they can both contribute and benefit from the collective pool of expertise, experience and passion.
  • Establish the NKAI PLD arm to focus on the PLD of our membership and possibly extend to the wider Māori Immersion network.
  • Invest in Principal collegiality across the network, professional development, support and guidance regarding their personal wellbeing.
  • Provide targeted PLD in NKAI priority areas to our teachers through a combination of partnerships with other PLD providers, as well as NKAI becoming a PLD provider and offering targeted PLD services ourselves.
  • Consolidate the utilisation of the NKAI collaboration and co-creation infrastructure to enable collegial support across NKAI at anytime and anywhere.
  • Initiate NKAI student initiatives that have a direct impact on student development which includes leadership programs, reo and tikanga programs, opportunities for whānaungatanga, academic and vocational programs and health initiatives.

NKAI Partnerships and Advocacy:  In 2018 NKAI made a concerted effort to honour our partnerships and ensure that we advocate on behalf of our kaupapa and our stakeholders. 2019 will require an increased effort from Ringa Wera and Ringa Raupā as we endeavour to participate in an increased number of forums and initiatives. Of major importance is for all people who represent NKAI to have a clear understanding of what is important to NKAI.
